This baby is one month old.

The 7 billionth person will be welcomed to the world today, according to the United Nations, marking a momentous milestone for the population of the earth, which continues to grow at an exponential pace.

Just 12 years ago, the earth was home to 6 billion people, according to the United Nations, and back in the 1960s, the earth’s population measured only half that number — 3 billion.  And in the time of our founding fathers, there were just 1 billion inhabitants on earth.

No one can say for certain who this 7 billionth baby will be or even where they will be born, but scientists believe they have a realistic guess, and it all boils down to the math: India.

Nearly every second a baby is born in India, making it the fastest growing country in the world.  Currently China is the world’s most populous country but India’s population is expected to surpass that of China in another 14 years.

And in another decade we will be welcoming the 8 billionth person into the world.

But whether it is in the United States or Uganda – we will never quite know for sure.
