Congresswoman Michele Bachmann claims in her official bio that she received an LL.M in tax law, at William and Mary. However, it appears that William and Mary doesn’t offer an LL.M degree in tax law.
William and Mary does NOT now and never has offered an LL.M Degree in Tax Law.
The ONLY LL.M Program that William and Mary offer is for “Foreign Students” … Non U.S. Lawyers … William & Mary’s ONLY LL.M program is titled: “LL.M in American Law.” not Tax Law.
Her bio there doesn’t state that her law degree is from Oral Roberts University, even though William and Mary is mentioned. Perhaps she can clarify this during one of her many media interviews. Perhaps Rep. Bachmann got into the foreign LL.M program because she was actually born in Kenya.
UPDATE: This post reflecting questions about Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s official bio raised the spectre that it was inaccurate when she claimed an LL.M degree in tax law from William and Mary. Because the college doesn’t offer that degree now, there was speculation that her bio was misleading. However, having checked with William and Mary, it was confirmed that Bachmann did obtain an LL.M degree in tax law when it was offered in 1988.

Actually for decades The Marshall Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary offered a degree called a “Master of Law and Taxation,” and I think that is what Ms. Bachmann received and what she in facts claims to have a received.

except the degree is only offered to foreign students. Its a masters in American law for foreign lawyers, not an LLM for American attorneys.

I dislike Bachmann myself, but that doesn’t mean I’m just going to accept this crap as true. This took me 2 seconds to find after going on the website for William and Mary. Statements with no proof to back it up make you just as bad as Bachmann.
