New York Authorities Are Going after Paul Manafort’s Financial Records to Get to Trump

Trump Manafort

For those questioning which of Trumps’ various shadowy campaign advisers might eventually be the one that leads to his own downfall, the odds may now be shifting back to Paul Manafort. He’s already known to have taken tens of millions of dollars from a pro-Kremlin oligarch, and he’s on the threshold of registering as a foreign agent. It turns out the Feds, along with New York State and New York City, are going after Manafort’s financial records to get to Trump.

This has been going for a month but is just leaking out now, in apparent response to Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey to try to disrupt the Russia investigation. Now that all kinds of things are being leaked in order to hurry the process, it turns out Manafort’s financials are being pursued on three levels. The Wall Street Journal is revealing that New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. are both pursuing Manafort’s real estate deals in the city.

It’s notable that Donald Trump can’t fire either of these individuals, because they are not federal employees to begin with. Interestingly, the WSJ article states that the Department of Justice is pursuing Paul Manafort’s financial dealings that stands out because it’s no longer clear what’s going on inside the DOJ now that Attorney General Jeff Sessions is vaguely un-recusing himself. But either way, there’s fundamentally nothing Trump can do to stop the New York State and city investigations. And they should be a treasure trove.

It’s been suspected that Trump and Manafort are deeply connected financially. Manafort lives in Trump Tower, and the two both have compulsively odd connections with Russia. So if investigators can indeed get ahold of Manafort’s full financial records, it could reveal Trump’s own financial connections to the Kremlin in the process.

In the meantime, Trump may have faltered when he used his infamous Twitter account to launch a public threat in the direction of recently fired Comey. Trump was trying to scare Comey into keeping quiet about whatever he knows. But in the process, Trump seemed to admit that he or his allies have been secretly recording his conversations with Comey all along.

Trump has since admitted in a television interview with Lester Holt that he fired Comey to try to bring an end to the FBI’s investigation of the Trump-Russia scandal. But now the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, Congressman Adam Schiff, is seriously trying to have Trump turn over any such tapes as evidence in the committee’s own investigation into the same scandal. This sets up a catch-22 from which Trump won’t be able to easily free himself.
