In another turn of events in Donald Trump’s Russia scandal, Congresswoman Maxine Waters appeared on MSNBC and stated her position that the supposed Russian sex tape blackmail of Trump is in fact true. While various aspects of the infamous Trump-Russia dossier from former MI6 agent Christopher Steele have been corroborated, including meetings dates and participants, Waters is the first in government to assert that the ‘pee pee tape’ aspect of the dossier is also true.
BASE OF STATEMENT
It’s not immediately clear what Waters is basing her statement on. Is she merely stating her belief that it’s true, or was she basing this on inside knowledge she has but can’t yet share? Most of her committee assignments in the House of Representatives are finance related, but she is the Ex Officio of Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, so it’s possible she’s seen classified details about whatever illicit blackmail Russia is purportedly holding over Trump’s head. If so, then she’s in the tricky position of being able to suggest what she’s seen, but not able to reveal the specific classified sourcing.
“We already know about the part about the coverage they have on him with sex actions is supposed to be true,” she said, referring to a dossier leaked late last year claiming the Russians had compromising sexual and financial information on the now-president. “They have said that’s absolutely true, some other things they kind of allude to,” Waters continued during a Thursday appearance on MSNBC.
The broadcast’s host, Ali Velshi, asked her for more information: “You say you think them to be true. How are we all going to find out what is true and what isn’t true? Does it help that you think so? Because unless you have information we don’t have, that’s an allegation.”
Waters replied: “You understand that I am saying the investigations must be done, the drilling down must be done. We must get to the facts of what it has been about. I don’t think you can do the impeachment just because I think or others think. But I think if we do the investigations, that we will find the connections and I do think that impeachment will be necessary.”
ALL WILL COME OUT SOON
Waters also responded that it will all come out if the Trump-Russia investigation in Congress is handled properly. She’ll likely be hard-pressed in successive interviews to offer more context for her allegation. But Waters has been reliably out ahead on these things and has been successively vindicated. And at the least, we’ve reached the point where a member of Congress is emphasizing that the Russian sex blackmail over Trump is true.
