New Bishop in Lubbock Catholic Diocese

Pope Francis named Dallas priest Robert Coerver as bishop of the Lubbock Catholic Diocese.

The announcement Tuesday marks the third bishop for the Diocese of Lubbock, according to a Dallas Diocese news release. Coerver, 62, is a Dallas native who grew up in St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in East Dallas and graduated from Jesuit College Preparatory School in northwest Dallas, according to the Dallas Diocese and a Vatican Radio news release. He’s served at St. Rita Catholic Church in northwest Dallas since 2010.

Coerver was ordained to the priesthood in 1980.

He’ll be ordained as bishop at a special Mass at Christ the King Cathedral in Lubbock 2 p.m. Nov. 21, according to the Dallas Diocese.

He succeeds Bishop Plácido Rodríguez, who initially planned to retire October of 2015, The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported in 2014. The pope accepted Rodríguez’s resignation Tuesday.
